Our patients and families have found James Schaller's music to be beautiful and serene.  Our staff also found his music to be soothing and relaxing for the entire atmosphere at the Residence.  His music has been a welcomed addition to our scope of hospice care we are able to provide to our patients and their families.

Every hospice needs to hear James Schaller's message that there is more to hospice than pain medication and family bereavement service, therapeutic music is perfect for any medical situation.

BRING A MUSIC PRACTITIONER TO YOUR COMMUNITY

I have walked with saints.  Well….I’ve walked with hospice workers and I consider these people saints and among the most amazing people on the planet. They are hardwired for compassion and service.

It was Thursday and I had just begun my visit at the residential facility of a hospice.  There was a new patient, a lovely gentleman in his early 70s.  He was in his wheelchair and asked if I would play for him and his wife out in the living room area where there was more room.

No problem.  I arranged the furniture so they could sit next to each other and I began to play.  They clasped hands and talked quietly of past hopes, future unknowns, their love, and finally whispered conversation ceased.

I continued to play and vary the emotional content of the music by what I felt was needed.  Tears came and went as did smiles and sighs.  I beheld the truth of the moment.  Here were two lovers who had traveled together for many years, shared the joys and sorrows of life together and who were taking leave of one another.

The moment was over , and in the sweet silence that always follows the music they held onto each other for long moments.  Then they looked up and smiled.  I took my leave.

A few days later I received a call from the wife asking me to play at her husband’s memorial service.  She said that the time they spend with me playing was deep, healing and a treasured moment of respite in a difficult time.  I take no credit.  I just showed up with skill and my intention to serve.  I thanked her for allowing me to share that experience with her and her husband thereby enriching my life.

If you can see yourself as being the ‘cause’ of this type of experience for many people, please contact us for information on sponsoring a program in your community.  You will feel ‘warm and fuzzy’ beyond words because you will be instrumental (no pun intended) in bringing the following benefits to patients:

  • reduction in panic and anxiety attacks
  • pain reduced
  • facilitate sleep after a sleepless night
  • reconciliations between family members
  • loneliness and fear transformed
  • transitions and vigils surrounded by dignity
  • grief softened
  • recovery hastened
  • healing supported

Sound Covenant, a 501(c) 3 tax-exempt organization, has developed a program whereby you can bring the benefits of a Music Practitioner program to your community.

We collaborate with five organizations that train therapeutic musicians.  We arrange for the program to be structured at the healthcare facility (hospital, hospice or nursing home) of your choice.  We finalize all paper work and administer the program.
